GPS Notes

From a Tripadvisor reviewer who arrived before us: "We had trouble finding it (stupid GPS), but were embarrassed to discover we had driven past it twice. It's located in town, across the street from the gas station. You really can't miss it. If you find yourself surrounded by fields, you've gone too far down Rt. 812 (way, way too far)."

Some GPS systems route to the older address (9748 Main Street) rather than the current 9756 State Route 812. Both addresses point to the same building. If your GPS sends you down Route 812 past the village center and into open countryside, turn around — you've gone too far.

Parking

Free parking is available in the museum's own lot, immediately adjacent to the building. Additional street parking is available on Main Street in front of the museum. The lot is unpaved and can be uneven in spots; please drive carefully especially after rain.

Accessibility

The first floor of the museum (including the sugar house replica and the Maple Hall of Fame) is accessible from the main entrance. The second and third floors are reached by stairs only — the building is a former school and does not have an elevator. Visitors with mobility concerns can experience a substantial portion of the museum on the first floor alone. More accessibility info

What's Nearby

Croghan is a small village; the museum is a primary attraction along with two seasonal smaller museums and a handful of restaurants. The broader region offers:

  • Lewis County maple farms — many are open for visits during the spring sugaring season (March–April). Ask at the gift shop for current open farms.
  • Adirondack Park — the southwest entrance is about 30 minutes east of Croghan.
  • Tug Hill region — known for the heaviest snowfall in New York State (an average of 200+ inches per winter) and excellent summer hiking.
  • Lake Ontario — about an hour west.
  • Thousand Islands — about 90 minutes northwest.

Lodging

Croghan has limited lodging within the village. Most visitors stay in Lowville (15 minutes south) or Watertown (40 minutes west), both of which have multiple chain hotels and locally-owned bed-and-breakfasts. Lewis County tourism (lewiscountychamber.org) maintains a directory.
